How to shop around for a massage school:

  1. Determine the requirements in your state and/or city. Currently 45 states have state-wide licensure and each state has different requirements. In my state, Oklahoma, we require massage therapists to be licensed with the Oklahoma Board of Cosmetology & Barbering. You must have a transcript of at least 500 hrs from a school that is approved through the Oklahoma Board of Private and Vocational Schools. You must also pass the national licensure test for massage therapists, the MBLEx (Massage & Bodywork Examination).

  2. Get a list of massage schools in your area. Use google, or the OBPVS has a list of approved schools. If you live far from a major city and commuting is an option, include those schools as well.

  3. Browse the schools’ websites. Most schools will list a lot of the information you need to narrow down your choices. Look at hours of the program they offer, the class schedules, and the cost. Look at the instructors and their qualifications and training.

  4. Look at the numbers. Make sure to include what is and is not included in your tuition. Other costs associated with massage school are your textbooks, uniform, massage table, sheets, lotion bottle & holster, lotion, and the MBLEx testing fee. All those supplies add up, and may help you better weigh the true cost of each school.

  5. Visit the school. Narrow your choices down, and then reach out to your top choices. If classes are in session, ask to sit in! Schedule an interview with the director or instructor and bring your questions. Check out the classroom and clinic if there is one. Look out for cleanliness, organization, and accessibility. Make sure it’s an environment you would feel comfortable in.

  6. Make your choice and apply!

Researching an education program means weighing the ROI, the return on investment. Sitting down and running the numbers will help you see if you are able to budget or borrow and ensure the quality of your education will give you the ability to pay back this investment. When all is said and done, it’s your gut that will tell you where you are supposed to be. Trust yourself.
